Ebook Bridging the Family-Professional Gap Facilitating Interdisciplinary Services for Children With Disabilities

The gap between families of children with disabilities and the allied health, educational, and medical community is real. As professionals communicate effectively, demonstrate sensitivity, and exhibit empathy, the gap narrows. This book is a specific effort to bridge that gap. Its primary purposes are to facilitate family preparedness for interdisciplinary team functioning and to promote interdisciplinary professionals¹ awareness of family members¹ concerns and priorities. Practicing interdisciplinary professionals serve as authors of thirteen discipline-specific chapters providing commonsense explanations of typical team responsibilities and discussing parent participation in ideal service delivery. Chapters also include family questions obtained via a national survey of parents of children with disabilities. These questions are answered by chapter authors, and throughout the text, in highlighted sections, brief commentaries regarding chapter authors¹ responses to parents questions are provided by the editors. In addition, each chapter includes a case example where the chapter¹s points are illustrated within real-world scenarios. This book serves as an excellent guide to services for families, and it represents something unusual in that family voices are provided a forum for expression. It provides a primary resource for family members of children with disabilities, as well as interdisciplinary teams functioning in public schools, hospitals, residential facilities for persons with mental retardation, public/private clinics, and community programs and may consist of audiologists, nutritionists, occupational therapists, parents, physical therapists, physicians, psychologists, special educators, speech-language pathologists, and social workers, among others.
